30% Syllabus Cut for Classes 9-12 by CBSE – A Much-Needed Decision in the Wake of Corona

It has been months since the outbreak of the pandemic halted our plans overnight and confined us to our homes. And, though every life has been altered in an unpredicted way, there is no denying the fact that our students have been one of the sections most affected by the uncertainties. We understand that online classes brought in a semblance of normalcy for the children, but things were not so easy for the senior classes. After all, the indefinite postponing of exams and promotions had made them more anxious and worried.

But, there is finally some good news for the students under the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education). Recent announcements from the board have revealed a thirty percent syllabus cut for classes 9 to 12, while retaining the core concepts, for the academic year 2020 – 2021. We, at Gurukul The School, laud this decision and believe that this is a much-needed respite for students in the wake of the ongoing health emergency.

With that being said, today, we will share some of our thoughts with you on this recent decision by CBSE.

The decision will benefit the students in various ways

One of the prime reasons for us to praise the decision is that the students will be majorly benefitting from this revised syllabus. It is true that teachers will have to explain the concept for even the deleted topics, but the fact that questions will not be asked from these topics makes it a good news for the students.

The parts that have been deleted will be covered as base concepts for other chapters, which means teachers will still need to touch upon those topics for the students. However, we believe that with the syllabus reduced, more than twelve to fifteen marks in the question paper will become easier as the topics that have been removed were trickier and frequently asked in the exams. All in all, the reduction in the number of topics will make the papers a little easier across various subjects.

We would especially like to mention the fact that the board has decided to reduce the majority of the practical-based syllabus from the science subjects. This was a much-needed step as it would not be possible for the schools to offer adequate hours to each student to complete the lab work, given the fact that we all stuck at home for what seems like an indefinite time.

A greater sense of responsibility for the educators

We will have to agree that this decision to revise the syllabus is not going to be easy on the teachers’ part. After all, there is a greater responsibility on teachers now to make sure that even the deleted concepts are well-understood by the students in order to grasp the context of the topics that they are being taught. Moreover, as we mentioned earlier, the teachers will also need to pay attention to the fact that the students are imbibing the ideas and theories behind the deleted practical-based parts of the syllabus. In such an uncertain scenario, teachers have to focus on explaining the practical-based topics well to make sure that our students understand the concepts thoroughly even without the lab hours.

So, even though the teaching hours have been somewhat reduced, the roles and responsibilities of our educators have taken a new shape. However, it is also important to mention in this regard that the dedicated and experienced teachers at Gurukul are competent enough to handle such changes for the greater good of the students.
